If, and only if, both those things are true, then it is indeed better to bottom out than to make Dirk suffer first round exits the rest of his career. But if there's a chance of competing, I hold on for dear life. Rebuilding isn't as easy as OKC made it look, it requires a lot of luck.

Agree with this. It would have to be Dirk's wish and a mutual decision between he and Cuban. Even in a scenario that the Mavs strike out this summer I can't imagine Dirk doing anything other than be a good soldier and stick it out like Nash did with the Suns the last two years.
