Perhaps you're unfamiliar with the luxury tax? The Lakers are clearly in an unusual situation with their revenue stream being what it is, but with the amount of money they stand to save by amnestying Pau (who was basically an MLE player for them this year) they'd be stupid not to consider it. He's absolutely a candidate.
