Buying picks is unfortunately not a general strategy of much utility because of the annual cap on payoffs under the new CBA. Worth it if there's someone in particular that you really like, but it can limit your flexibility in subsequent dealings so you probably don't want to do it just to build up the number of picks in your vault.
It will be interesting to see if the Mavs try to bring Calathes over, though.
