The point is that he wants to be a featured player on offense, or at least wants to play in a system that's conducive to his style of play. I think the pairing with Nowitzki is only natural.
The times the Lakers went Gasol/Howard high-low last year, they were extremely effective. They really suffered in the pick and roll game (which makes it curious as to why Howard wants to play with Paul so badly) and the Kobe-isolation game. The Harden isolation and the Lin/Harden pick and roll game are staples of the Rockets game, while the Mavericks have had a lot of success working inside out and moving the ball around the perimeter (a la the Spurs this year).
