There should have been a number agreed upon that would have secured JJ's release instead of a trade. I think the agent just assumed that there was only a small chance that anyone would trade for JJ and that he would be released with most of his money intact

Basically this.
You don't assume in the NBA. You either need a trade kicker or a no-trade clause if you are dead-set on not being traded. Otherwise, you will get traded.
If you are getting paid big bucks and not getting playtime, you negotiate a buyout. If you don't do that, some team will pay money to get you. With a buyout, you lose money but gain control of where you play next.
