The Lakers can still defense teams and rebound with a small lineup. The Mavs can't. It's that simple. Malone is a better defender and plays the 5 better than Dirk so th eLaker's can get away with it. Playing a center and then Dirk at the 4 with Walker at the 3 is a really good rebounding team and you still have 4 scorers on the court and 4 guys running the floor. That's all you need.
