I've noticed it since Dirk's injury a year ago when he stepped on Popeye Jones. I think we almost defeated SA in SA with Finley playing out of his heart. Finley stopped to be Finley since the Big Two found each other on the court -3 years ago? Precisely one year before that Nash and Dirk started to be All Stars.
It's no big secret that Fin has scaled back his game to make more room for Dirk. Dirk is usually a much better option. However when Dirk isn't here, then Fin needs to do more. I think that is the best explanation. It's not because Fin can't do this when Dirk is present, it's because he's consciously choosing not to. And it's the coaching staff that asked Fin to do that. Not many of the Million dallar babies in the NBA have the maturity to do that.
