Default RE:Beyond my wildest dreams...said Maylee T.

Just checked the numbers. Even if we really "screwed" the Blazers contract-wise (which I SERIOUSLY doubt they'd let happen), this is about the best trade we could make to dump salary and stay within the parameters described above:

Dallas trades: SF Antawn Jamison (15.7 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 1.0 apg in 30.0 minutes)
SF Tariq Abdul-Wahad (15.7 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 1.0 apg in 30.0 minutes)
PF Danny Fortson (3.8 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 0.2 apg in 11.8 minutes)
SF Eduardo Najera (3.3 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 0.4 apg in 13.7 minutes)
PG Tony Delk (6.6 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 0.8 apg in 16.3 minutes)
Dallas receives: SF Rasheed Wallace (17.1 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 2.7 apg in 38.1 minutes)
C Dale Davis (6.0 ppg, 6.6 rpg, 1.5 apg in 28.8 minutes)
Change in team outlook: -6.3 ppg, -3.0 rpg, and +1.8 apg.

Portland trades: SF Rasheed Wallace (17.1 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 2.7 apg in 38.1 minutes)
C Dale Davis (6.0 ppg, 6.6 rpg, 1.5 apg in 28.8 minutes)
Portland receives: SF Antawn Jamison (15.7 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 1.0 apg in 45 games)
SF Tariq Abdul-Wahad (15.7 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 1.0 apg in 45 games)
PF Danny Fortson (3.8 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 0.2 apg in 33 games)
SF Eduardo Najera (3.3 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 0.4 apg in 28 games)
PG Tony Delk (6.6 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 0.8 apg in 29 games)
Change in team outlook: +6.3 ppg, +3.0 rpg, and -1.8 apg.

TRADE ACCEPTED

Again, no way that Portland would make that trade simply to get rid of Wallace or simply to get Jamison, but assuming they would...

The Mavs could then let Davis and Wallace walk in the offseason, and they'd be able to shed a little over $32 million in salary next year. The problem is, they'd still be committed to paying just over $52 million BEFORE giving Steve his inevitable payraise. By the time they do that, the total commitment will likely be in the $57-59 million range. That means they're gonna be $10-15 million over the cap.

You'd have to figure out a way to dump not only Jamison's salary but Walker's salary to get Dampier to Dallas as a free agent.
