Default RE: The ABC's - And D's - Of Mavs Success at db.com

Hmmm a few items on this discussion that have taken a weird track ...

"When Nelson had Pat Ewing, he got fired because he would not play him" ....HUH? Nonsense.

"in the heat game, [Damp] was in foul trouble wasnt he" ... Absolutely, and it was obvious. If you look at the play-by-play, Damp came out when one of two things happened: Shaq sat, or Damp got foul problems. Nellie was using him specifically to neutralize Shaq, and the Mavs DOMINATED when Damp was on the floor vs Shaq. So Nellie sat him so he wouldnt get more fouls while Shaq sat. He had four as it was. The game wasnt close down the stretch, so the 4th quarter (that Nellie had obviously saved him for) he barely played - Shaq left with about 8 1/2 mins left and never came back in, and neither did Damp.

"We signed Damp because Cuban said, YOU WILL PLAY A CENTER" .... And so? Damp is playing well, regardless of whether he was signed for that reason, or another. (I doubt the accuracy of that info, though. I instead believe EVERYONE in the organization wanted a bonafide center.)

"We had a logjam at power forward last year and Fortson was WAAAAY down the list.....That was the problem" .... Here is info you may or may not know, and hopefully it will color your view of Nellie playing Fortson. Fortson didnt play down the stretch because by the end of the year he still didnt know the plays on offense or the rotations on defense. Thats a fact. He is good in pickup style ball (ie, go down there and get a board, take a shot, whatever) but wasnt reliable to work in a team concept in Dallas.
