I think people are loosing sight of the fact that a team would have to be pretty deep in luxury tax territory to even consider using this exception. After Portland doesn't pick up Nick's option they'll be about $12MM below the cap and even further below the luxury tax threshold...it wouldn't make much sense to cut Randolph. He's so talented that you just have to hope that the next coach can get through to him.

Honestly, with the restrictions around the excemption I don't expect many teams to use it.
