Avery Johnson started by dispelling the rumor that Shawn Kemp might return to Dallas. Another Dallas media outlet was reporting that Avery had met with Kemp in Houston to discuss the possibility that he might join the Mavs in the event that they were awarded an injury exception by the NBA. Avery denied the report, saying he had not even spoken with Kemp and that he thought it was highly unlikely the team would get the injury exception. The reason being that they do expect to have 11 guys in uniform in time for the playoffs, even though they are currently running basically a nine-man lineup.
