I know that riding a bike at low speed can be dangerous too, but I always wonder: why are there are so many vehicles on the streets that can easily top 150mph when the max. speed limit on any street/road is 80mph in the US (correct me if I'm wrong).

It's probably the same as with smoking. Everyone knows it's wrong but the government is not able to do anything against it. The only place I know of where you can really go fast on public roads without breaking the law is the German Autobahn.
