from what I've read, the muslim reference was a small part of the message he was giving.

the relgious experts say tho it was a pointed remark, meant to say he differs from john paul's approach to islam. no more big tent and kumbaya from the vatican with islam.

the pope made a more forceful statement that the west needs to have a core of religious principles guiding its culture to "confront" islam. I guess the point was secularism will fail to stop the force of faith.

pretty much what i would expect him to say.
