A little different imo. Those empires were built and sustained through aggressive land acquisition. The US in general is an empire because it's the tremendous beacon of freedom for talented individuals the world over. It's quite different. If we decided to not be an "empire" tommorrow where would we withdraw from? We hold no land against anyones will.
