He's quietly challenging for the role of second best player on this team.
Along with Dirk, he'c clearly got the toughest jobs on the team too. And yes, I said jobs - plural. He runs the offense, makes things happen when no one else can or will, defends the quickest perimeter players, and does his best to make everyone else better.
