you are severely overrating the facts when you say the patriots got beat "big play after big play with its (giants) rookie fill-ins." the biggest plays were made by eli manning.
The only possible defense I can think of for this not being a bigger upset is that the Patriots have 3 other championships.

Teams have been beaten by the 8th seed before, but when your 18-0 playing a wildcard team in the Superbowl that is a hell of a lot worse than the Mavs losing to the Warriors. Especially when you take into account they had a losing record against them in the regular season, everyone knew it wouldn't be an easy matchup for them. The Pats were supposed to crush the Giants.

This will go down as a bigger upset in the media, if not for any other reason than football is much more popular to the masses.
