The further any one side gets from the center, the less impact the center has...or so the conventional wisdom would go. The problem for the Republicans is that they have stances that are way left of center, while the Democrats don't have many that are right of center, and so the center has shifted.

These days, to claim the center is to plant yourself on the left. That's why I say: Why not go liberal? Hell, everyone else is doing it.
