If you're going to drive from NJ to see the Mavs, you're going to spend $300 in gas, plus hotels, fast food, etc. Take the money you would have spent on gas and buy some floor seats for the Mavs game at the Nets on Dec 19th. Or, if you have to see them in Dallas, don't skimp on ticket price if you're going to spend $500 to get here.
