Stars goalie Turco agrees to three-year contract

Associated Press

DALLAS – Dallas Stars goalie Marty Turco, who missed the first week of training camp after rejecting an offer from the team, agreed to a new three-year contract Thursday.

A source familiar with the negotiations said that the three-year deal is worth $12 million, plus incentives. Those incentives are for advancing in the deep into the playoffs and/or if Turco should win one of the NHL's major individual awards.

Turco was a finalist for the Vezina Trophy last season, when he set a modern NHL record with his 1.72 goals against average. The Vezina is awarded to the league's top goalie. He was also an All-Star in his first season as the starter, finishing 31-10-10.

Turco had rejected a similar offer from the Stars last week and didn't report with the Stars to their training camp in Vail, Colo.

"I'm very happy to get this new contract completed," Turco said in a statement released by the team.

Turco will rejoin the team Friday night when the Stars return home for a preseason game against the New York Rangers.

After his record-setting regular season, Turco had a 1.88 GAA and a .919 save percentage in the playoffs. The Stars were eliminated in the second round by Anaheim.

Anaheim goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere last week signed a four-year contract worth about $5 million a season. Giguere won the Conn Smythe Trophy last season as playoff MVP.

Turco was selected by the Stars in the fifth round of the 1994 draft. He holds the NCAA record for 127 victories at Michigan, where he led his team to two national championships.
