We didn't give him a huge contract. We gave him a very reasonable contract for the way he was playing at the time (and really, for how he played most of this season).
His contract isn't great in the context of the new CBA, but at the time we had no other center and he was a free agent. Getting him for the contract we did was actually a pretty impressive move.
And no, there is no argument to be made that Dirk is getting screwed over. None.
