From an ethical standpoint, I think there has to be significant justification for a researcher to engage in deliberate deception with a test subject.
I'm pretty sure getting into a PhD program doesn't meet that criteria.

Well, maybe I should change that to "literally hours after I discovered he was banned". I have no idea when he was actually banned.
I'm not saying I necessarily believe it. It's pretty out there. I was just stating that at the very least he's had this story ready to go for a while.
