Well, according to the author of this thread, he was at a conference when he was banned and didn't discover it until he came back.

From an ethical standpoint, I think there has to be significant justification for a researcher to engage in deliberate deception with a test subject.

I'm pretty sure getting into a PhD program doesn't meet that criteria.
