Or...it's like the daughter breaks up with the really good guy in favor of the drug-addled loser you KNOW she is worse off with. Then that relationship turns sour, meanwhile the good guy is off being the great person you knew he was.
If your idiot daughter is still single, you certainly do show her how much worse off she is for her poor decision.
