Does anyone realize that the Dallas Mavericks might be a better team this season than last season?
The easy and lazy assessment of the Mavericks is team owner Mark Cuban has blown up the team that won last season’s NBA title. The hard and difficult assessment is the Mavericks could be better.
The easy and lazy assessment is Cuban didn’t do anything to keep last year’s players together, that he ran off key players such as backup point guard J.J. Barera, center Tyson Chandler and forward Caron Butler. The hard and difficult assessment is Dallas has a salary cap. Cuban didn’t want to pay a luxury tax for going over the salary cap – a position many NBA owners take – and Barera, Chandler and Butler left the Mavericks for more money as free agents.
Barera turned down the Mavericks’ one-year contract offer to sign a four-year, $19-million contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves. And really, has anyone heard of him since? He’s averaging about 11 points, 3 assists and 2 turnovers in 20 minutes per game. Not bad numbers, but I’m not sure they’re worth $4.75 million a year. Dallas picked up guard Delonte West, who’s averaging 8.3 points, 3.4 assists and 1.7 turnovers.
