It was absolutely savvy coaching today. There is simply
zero argument to the contrary. The Mavs massively expanded the lead, and when Dirk came back in the 3rd quarter he was just fine.
Complaining about something that's working beautifully--as it's working, no less--carries with it the implicit assumption that Carlisle would do the same thing in a future game at a time when it wouldn't work. You mistakenly assume that the coach is incapable of reading individual game situations differently and making decisions based on what he sees.
I cannot think of one game this season where Dirk sat that long during that stretch of a game without being in foul trouble. And yet you're complaining about it like there's some sort of precedent.
