Before firewire, enclosures that paired with a slot on your case and hooked into an ide cable were ABSOLUTELY the way to go, because of the incredible difference in speed.
But with Firewire and USB2, the speeds aren't as bad, but it's still a lot cheaper to go the enclosure route that uses usb2. Plus if you decide you no longer need an external drive, you can pop the thing inside.
