Master and Commander was a damn good movie. That scene wasn't unrealistic at all, because rifles made before the 20th century were terribly inaccurate. Also, the guy he shot wasn't the captain, it was the ship's doctor. Russel Crowe was the captain.
I found it to be very average. It's certainly my least favorite Russel Crowe movie that I've seen.
