Stanley Kubrick's The Killing. Gritty film noir. Love the non-linear story telling, and Maurice's speeches in the chess club are pretty amazing (albeit hard to understand with his accent.)

If you like Tarantino, check this out for one of the main influences on films like Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction.
