That is what Stern doesn't care about. Only LA and NY can continue to spend forever. Every other team has to make hard decisions regarding their salary cap obligations. It's why Harden was traded. It was why Asik was released. etc.

I agree that he seems to have chilled out a bit as an owner, and he clearly has other interests now as well. But he's never seemed like the person that could sit still with a single project. But he's still likely the most intensely connected and involved owners in the league, front row at every game and deeply invested in everything the team does, and I think we are starting to take it for granted.
