Personally, I think that Snape is acting almost entirely of his own accord. Theres a poignant line in OOTP where one of the paintings tells Harry that Slytherins, when given the choice will always choose to save their own necks. Still....I think he will do something "good" in the next book by choice or not, and I still hope he ends up dead. The slimy git.
