He is a big upgrade mainly in low post 1 on 1 defense, Dampier is ok at helping and blocking shots, but he isn't very active 1 on 1, and if you saw how Nene abused him you would see Gortat is kind of player the team needs down low, he is athletic, a very good rebounder, and can defend the 4 and 5 position
