The problem is that the idea that he should always pass it to an open Dirk is always a good argument in theory but never a good one in reality.

If Ellis never took a shot when he was open, because he was always looking for Dirk, then defenses could always cheat off of Ellis. It's as simple as that and you can't make a black-and-white argument. You can argue that he should pass to Dirk more often (which isn't terribly justified by the passing stats so far) but to say that Ellis should never take a shot when Dirk is open is patently silly.
