Ya know, the AFC, in my mind, was never that bad. I think overall AFC v. NFC records bear that out. The problem was two-fold. First, the dominant team in the league was from the same conference for the better part of fifteen years: 49'ers; Giants; Redskins; Cowboys; Greenbay. Just clearly dominant teams. Second, for whatever reason, the AFC championship game frequently resulted in the lesser team winning. Undeserving San Diego got to the Superbowl in 1995. A couple of those Bills teams shouldn't have gone.

Regardless, the NFC always had the best coaches during that span for whatever reason.
