Lump In The Throat Time

This post at Power Line put a lump in my throat. Click on the picture in the lower left hand corner to enlarge it. I can’t imagine what the President must have been thinking shaking the hands of these men and women he was sending into harm’s way, but some of the emotion is visible on his face. I will never forget how I felt in 1991 when I said goodbye to my husband on a base in North Carolina when he left for the Persian Gulf. Some of the other wives and girlfriends were in tears for much of the time waiting for the final goodbye. You have to understand that we did not know how few casualties that war would yield. We had visions of past wars in our minds. I was really calm and joking around most of the time. Then when it was really time to say the last goodbye, the tears started a little. When I got into my car and drove off the base the floodgates opened. I can’t imagine how much harder it would have been if we had had kids then.

It is really amazing to think that thousands of Americans for the past two years have been going through similar situations, experiencing those same emotions and the Democrats think the strategy they have chosen will appeal to those people. They could have nominated someone like Joe Lieberman who would have helped boost the morale of the troops and could have probably, even as an opponent, joined the President on the Iraq issue to present a united front and attract more nations to the coalition. He then could have fought the election on Democrat friendly ground such as health care and other domestic issues. Instead, the Democrats chose to risk tearing the country apart and make the success of their campaign hinge on the failure of our military and commander-in-chief. I am not saying that Lieberman or a like-minded candidate would win, but I think he would stand a better chance than the current candidate – and the country would be much better for it.
