If Kobe were to retire before his next game:
Dirk is currently 3,204 misses behind (13,421 vs. 10,217)

If Dirk continued to shoot 47.7% (his career avg) and 18 FGA - he'd miss 8.7 shots per game and it would take him 369 more games, 4.5 more seasons if he played all 82 games of every season

So he'd catch up to Kobe in about Feb of 2018 (game 33 of the 2017-2018 season), at which point Dirk would be 39 years old

If Dirk continued at this year's rate of 52.9% of 15 FGA, he'd miss only 7 FGA per game, it'd take him 458 games to make up the difference or 5.6 full seasons shooting 15 FGA. In which case, it'd take him until game 16 of the 2019-2020 season-- or about February of 2020 when Dirk would be 41 years old.

If Kobe finishes his contract (this year and next) shooting the same FGA/percentage

Kobe is shooting 39.3% and 24 FGA per game, missing 14.6 shots per game. If he only finishes this year and next and plays all 82 games of each (and then immediately retires instead of becoming a backup somewhere else), he'll add 2,292 misses to his record, leaving him thousands of shots ahead of every other basketball player to ever live at 15,713.

At even the most conservative rate of Dirk shooting 47.7% on 18 FGA, it'd take Dirk 637 games to get there, or 7.7 full seasons or March of 2022. At which time, Dirk would be a very tired 43 years old (almost 44)
