How To: Stay in the Elite, even without Finley.
Waiving Finley really does take the Mavericks out of the Elite in the Western Conference. Phoenix, San Antonio, Denver, Houston, Sacramento will all be better than Dallas next year, IMO. But it doesnt have to be that way.
Stackhouse and especially Quis do not look to pass.
I know Finley didnt get a lot of assists, but he did look to pass it to Nowitzki more than anyone else on the team did.
My Plan:
1. * Trade Marquis Daniels to Boston for Mark Blount and Tony Allen. Mark Blount has improved his game a lot in the past 2 seasons. He can block shots and rebound well, good mid-range game, also moves well for a 7 footer. Tony Allen is basically insurance in case of injury, he is very athletic but his jump shot needs improvement.
2. Sign Antonio Daniels with the MLE. He is a good ball handler, quick as heck, athletic, and a tough defender. He can also play both guard positions.
3. Keep Stackhouse as the 6th man. We would need players that can both shoot and pass at the guard positions. Stackhouse does neither. Antonio takes better care of the ball too, he was #2 last year in assists per turnover. Less turnovers obviously means more chances to score and less chances for opposing team to get easy points.
Depth Chart: (Minutes)
PG - Terry(21), Harris(20), Daniels(7)
SG - Daniels(21), Stackhouse(19), Terry(8)
SF - Howard(33), Stackhouse(6), Van Horn(9)
PF - Nowitzki(36), Van Horn(12)
C - Dampier(29), Blount(19)
Total Minutes per game for each Player in 2005 , (MPG in 2004)
Terry - 29 , (30)
Harris - 20 , (15)
Daniels - 28, (27)
Stackhouse - 25 , (28)
Howard - 33 , (32)
Van Horn - 21 , (24)
Nowitzki - 36 , (38)
Dampier - 29 , (27)
Blount - 19 , (26)
*Why Boston does it:
They are considering waiving Blount anyways.
They can now choose to trade Pierce, because they now have Gerald Green and Ricky Davis that can play SF for them.
Pierce for Elton Brand and Chris Wilcox? Pierce for Jason Williams and Lorenzen Wright? Pierce for Kwame Brown and Larry Hughes?

Barring a series of miracles, Denever, Sacramento, and probably Houston will NOT be better than Dallas next year. (Unless maybe Finley signs with one of them. )

Denver with a full year with Karl, and a healthy Kenyon and Nene will be pretty damn good. Julius Hodge is already better than anything they had at SG last year.
Houston almost beat us in the playoffs basically playing 2 on 5. I think Yao will have a great year in 2005.
Stojakovic wasnt all that with Sacramento last year. Now that Webber is gone, Peja is now the man again. That is a good thing for him and the Kings.

RE: How To: Stay in the Elite, after waiving Finley.
- The Boston trade. Not sure about this one. Blount wouldn't be a bad option at backup C, but I'm not really all that high on him. You sort of write Tony Allen off, but I'm actually intrigued by that guy. Haven't seen him play very much, but he has some interesting stats. In particular, his rebounding was terrific last year for the C's, and his defensive numbers were very good as well. Still, I'd hold off on making this kind of deal until I got a better feel for how Marquis, DJ, and Pavel were doing in summer league. In particular, if either DJ or Pavel look capable of handling backup center duties, there's no need for this trade.
- Antonio Daniels would probably be my first choice out of available veteran NBA pg's if the Mavs needed a point, but with Devin and JT still on board in this scenario adding him doesn't make a lot of sense. Mavs would be better off looking for a SF to back up Josh and allow Stack to stay at SG.

I hate blount. He is another Damp. He played great to get a big contract, and now he doesn't care anymore. He is not that athletic, and not a great deffensive force at all. He can shoot from outside well but that is something we don't need.

Your assertations are inane...Finley was the worse passer on the team after Maquis Daniels. He never gives up the rock. If anything, giving Finley up will provide more minutes for more deserving players and thus, help keep the Mavs an elite team.

The west will be better next year than this year, without question.

It isn't that hard, Dallas uses the cash saved in the form of the MLE to add a proven backup big man. We are better when we do that.

these trades turn us into the grizzlies of texas.
no better than an 8 seed in the playoffs and a first round exit each year. sorry, we already have one big lazy piece of crap at center, we don't need another.

Out with the dead weight. In with some new ballers who can defend. Dallas will be much improved next year under avery.
