PGT: It's Gonna Be A Helluva Season
We lost, but it took a few lucky bounces (and some serious home cooking) for the reigning champs to beat us by 1 point.

- Refs taking Chandler out of the game, calling bogus fouls on the Mavs, Ellis not getting any love as always.
- Dirk showed up late, but showed up. Maybe going to him earlier to slow things down when it's not working next time. Should have shot the last shot where he had the chance.
- Parsons was good on D but bad on O. But he didn't force anything which was good.
- Ellis was good and glad to have Chandler back.
- Maybe call the TO (they had one i think) at the end? I know why RC did that, to not let SA set up their Defense, but it was rushed.
So, 5 on 8 but stayed close, good sign. There are improvements needed, but that's normal with a new team.

Great game. Mavs are very good. Fifty-five ish wins looks reasonably attainable.

Typical. Glad I turned the game off halfway through the 4th so I wouldnt have to view it with my own eyes. I see we're back to throwing away leads and bad late-game execution. Should be a fun season.

Funny that Chandler Parsons was decent on defense and terrible on offense. They game planned for him, and it showed.
Gotta get something from Greg Smith.

I still can't believe they allowed the flops against Dirk and Tyson of all players. Duncan flopping against Smith or Wright...fine. But you gotta respect the champs.

I guess I'll be in the minority, I wasn't able to watch the first 28ish minutes of game time cause of school but I thought the refs were mostly fine. On the second or third to last Mavs possession dirk was getting mugged off ball tho.

Good game. We are clearly still a little rough around the edges but we will get there. Some rockets embarrassment right now would help me feel better though

Hey, at least we are not the Rockets and traded Asik within the division to a team that had allready future MVP Davis and also Ryan Anderson.
That frontcourt is nasty and Davis/Asik gonna destroy a lot of teams, including Howard. combined 14 blocks and 34 rebounds. Of course it was just the Magic with no size except Vu...
Oh and we lost by one point and got two silly T

Dang, I was hoping we would get off our regular season loosing streak against the Spurs tonight. I had this penciled in as a loss (ring night and all), but this one still sucks. Looking forward to a great season, and this team looks like it can be a threat.

The Rockets got a probable lottery pick for a player they were quite obviously not going to be able to keep past his contract, they did well.

If the refs had ANY respect for Ellis, he'd not only be an All-Star, but he probably also be in the running for a scoring title... Dude should be taking a dozen FTs per game with how often he draws contact in the paint.

Mavs looked brilliant at numerous points of that game. Not bad for a team playing 5 against 8.

Except they could have gotten much more than that if they had been more patient and not shipped him out in a desperate fire sale to make room for Bosh. So, no, they didn't do very well at all.

I'd really like to see Parsons be a little more assertive going forward... I get that he wanted to be a team player in his first game as a Maverick, but I feel like he pushed himself out of his comfort zone as a result.
I think that had a lot to do with Dirk passing up that last shot - he wanted to give Parsons a chance to be a hero, give him some confidence. Oh, well...

The sad part is, if Patty Mills were there he woulda went 7/8 from three and we'd have lost by double digits. But I'm not worried at all about the loss. Our team needs time to gel, everything won't come together right away. Plus, if one ball bounces in our favor we're having a completely different discussion right now. But it is what it is... the refs were being extra generous to the Spurs on ring-night, and as usual they shoot an insane % from three. Now if we lose to the Jazz on Thursday at home, I might be concerned just a little.

Disappointing result, but I still enjoyed the game. Not bad for considering we still haven't figured our our true rotation against an already established team. Parson wasn't firing but he won't shoot 2-10 every night. Bench relies a lot on Harris. Not blaming refs but what does Monta need to do to get FTs

At one point of the game I saw Mekel on the bench. He looked really pale. Poor guy.

I didn't see more than one replay of the (second to)last possession yet, but the way I recall it, I didn't see a problem with the shot we got (except that it didn't fall, obviously).
Green seemed to be draped all over Dirk and he had not much time to work him, but he found a wide open Monta(?), who quickly passed it to a reasonably open Parsons on the wing. Everything felt a bit rushed, but I think this may have been the best shot we could get.
But don't get me wrong, I certainly wouldn't have minded had Dirk just taken a quick shot, maybe also speculating on a foul call.
Still, there was lots of good stuff to take from this game. The Spurs' flopping and lack of missing from long range was incredibly annoying, though. F 'em!

It's absurd how little respect that guy gets from the zebras.

Monta and Parsons both should be pump-faking and leaning in. Some people consider that cheap, but they would both get so many easy points that way.

Really solid game just tough to swallow on opening night and with so much optimism. Spurs shot the lights out (over fifty percent from three) and Chandler got in foul trouble in the third quarter. I'm not too worried about Parsons. He had his up and down games with Houston and the Spurs are a good defensive team. On top of that I think he just had an unusually bad shooting night.
Dirk looked good especially later on. Monta was a beast and Chandler was such a stark contrast to the complacent Dalembert last year the way he played. Jefferson had a really bad game (looked sloppy and missed some open threes).
If the Parsons shot goes in we're all on cloud nine right now. Mavs played well top to bottom for the most part and will only get better with improving chemistry. Should be a really fun season (hope everyone stays healthy!).

This. Mavs got a pretty good shot. I was yelling for the timeout when the play started but you can't be unhappy with the result and not allowing the Spurs to set up was probably the right move from RC.
Oh, and Aminu has to not take long mid range jumpers or threes please and thank you.

Then he draws it and passes out of it to an open guy. Can't be afraid that a double MAY come. Gotta be better than that.

Because he doesnt act during his drives. And getting FTs on your drives is all about acting. Its pretty sad but just ask and watch Harden or Pierce...
In other news, almost halftime in LA and Harden went allready nine times to the line.

He did pass it to an open guy. He started a sequence that resulted in a wide open shot. The double team had already started closing on him.

As much as I hate it but if monta was more vocal when going to the rim I think he'd get a lot more calls. Boozer just yelled while going for a layup and like clockwork the whistle blew. He was never touched.
Don't forget kawhi and patty mills were out. Hopefully we put up a better game next time around.

Just checked Parsons' 3 pointer percentage. about 37% for the last two seasons. Higher than I expected. His shooting looks odd and unstable. Also, his feet land a big step forward, every time I watch, I'm worried he might land on the defender's foot and get injured.

I have no problem with Dirk kicking that pass. It was a deep 3, but well withing CP's range...and Dirk would have been forced into taking an odd shot with the double team pressing. Dirk is a great teammate. Sure, Kobe doesn't pass that ball...but I think it was clearly the right basketball play.
I'm a little surprised that Parsons only got 10 attempts tonight. I would have liked to see Rick run a bit more for him. Even if he was just facilitating.
I know the Spurs are tough, but run the Tyson P&R a few times and see what Parsons gets done with that.
Good game. Crumby conclusion.
Kill the Jazz on Thursday!

My first reaction was that he shouldn't have passed, but on replay, the double is clearly coming (and only a few feet away), so this is definitely correct. The right play, as frustrating it is for a game to end without Dirk putting up a shot.
