Substantive commentary: dude is just unreal. I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say he's been the best clutch defender in the whole playoffs.

I tweeted it in the second half. They did it in the LA series and did it last night: They dared the refs to call a foul on Kidd when he checked Durant.

This thread is long overdue.
As long as Kidd has been here, we've tried putting him on Kobe, and it never really worked...until this playoff run. He's playing with all his smarts, and he has the best defensive footwork in the NBA. If you want to really enjoy him, crank up your DVR, and just watch his feet. Pure Brilliance.
This time he virtually defanged the black Mamba. It was a joy just to watch his footwork. For NBA superstar scorers, its all about the fake and the foul. Kobe fakes to get the defender up in the air, then he gets the foul. Next time, the defender stays down and he shoots over him. Next time he may drive. But Kidd almost never goes for the fake. He's in the right spot to take away what the scorer most wants to do. If he gets beat, he always forces the driver towards the help.
This is why he remains effective, even with shooters much taller than he is. It would seem like Durant could just rise up and shoot over him, but some how Kidd has him off balance when he goes up, and makes the shot harder for him. And because he's so hard to fake out, he's hard to blow by. So if you take away the drive and take away the foul, all thats left is the jump shot. And we'd all rather see KD and Kobe shooting jumpers.
This guy plays D so smart, it negates the speed of his opponent. Kidd is almost always in the right place. If we'd put him on Brandon Roy, we would not have that 23 point comeback on our record. If we'd had him to put on Mike Bibby, we might have gone to the finals 2 more times.
Here's hoping that in mid June, we'll say "if we'd had him in '06, we have beaten the Heat that time, too."

Kidd is playing unbelievable basketball, on both ends. He has defended the likes of Kobe Bryant, Russell Westbrook, and Kevin Durant when no one thought that he could, and he has orchestrated what has easily been the best-executing late-game offense in these playoffs.
There's only one thing left to do.

Having Chandler/Wood back there is HUGE, just HUGE. Jkiddo just makes sure that he stays in front of them and tries to contest without putting them on a foul line. Durant also needs to take more 3s when jkiddo is on him but he's being told to TAKE IT TO THE HOOP or he's a wuss. Silly really.

Seriously, the guy has two little brains in his arms, i'm sure of it. I mean, how amazing those hands are? Just an unbelievable basketball player, with probably the best intangibles in NBA history.

One play simplifies how incredibly smart he is on the basketball court....Marion blocks KD's 3 at the end of the 4th and what does Kidd do with the loose ball:
1. Jack it up from 60 feet? (which most players would've done)
2. Hold the ball for OT to avoid a turnover?
No, he calmly calls timeout so that we can set up a final attempt at winning in OT.
He's just a smart man.

This. In real time, I was thinking "Ahhhhhhhhh overtime!" Apparently, JKiddo was thinking, "Need one more chance for a win in regulation." It goes back to something I posted yesterday, which is that Kidd not only did the RIGHT thing, he did the absolute smartest thing that could possibly have been done. Amazing.
If the refs had been expecting the TO call, maybe they would have blown the whistle with more than 0.7 on the clock and the last play has a different result. Who knows...

One gem I discovered while checking stats: Kidd has had 16 steals so far this series. In case we win on Thursday, he could match or even break the record for most steals in a 5-game-series. The record so far are 21 steals by Micheal Ray Richardson, New Jersey Nets (vs. Philadelphia 76ers), 1984 and by Baron Davis, Charlotte Hornets (vs. New Jersey Nets), 2002.
Dirk could also break one. During this series he has made 50 FT's so far. The record in a 5-game-series is 62 by Oscar Robertson, Cincinnati Royals (vs. Philadelphia Warriors), 1964. I think Dirk's record is even more possible like that one for Kidd.

Another clutch crunch-time play by JKiddo...
Quote:
OKLAHOMA CITY -- Jason Kidd dished out seven assists in Game 4 plus one big one that didn't show up in the box score.
Chalk one up to Kidd the calmer. Frustrated center Tyson Chandler credited Kidd for helping him to keep a level head when he could have popped, which helped keep him on the floor for the entirety of the amazing 112-105 overtime victory.
"It was huge. I got frustrated a couple of times and every time I came over to the bench, Jason Kidd just kept pointing at his head, ‘Keep your head, keep your head,'" Chandler said. "I got frustrated again at the end of the game with some of the tangled-up [situations] I was getting involved in. I look over at him and he’s doing this (pointing at his head). It’s just at the right time."

We were down to one timeout ever since Carlisle called the one at the 5:04 mark when the score was 99-84.
I also had my hands in a T when Kidd caught the ball. Just sayin'.

Yeah, players should always be aware of how many timeouts they have left in crunch time. I think a better example would be the steal on Durant with one minute left in overtime. On paper, Kevin runs circles around Kidd with his athleticism. But in reality, Kidd has the timing on that spin move down perfectly and knows how and when to pry the ball free.

Kidd has quick hands. Quick hands are highly underrated everyone likes the blocks more. How many strips does Kidd get a game. Dirk also has quick hands. The quickest hands in Basketball ever were connected to the arms of Sharones Marchilonious who Played for the Golden State Warriors before and during Run DMC. They brought in a Karate expert once to work on their hand speed. Sharoness who had never done Karate slapped the guy silly. Totally kicked his ass. Just because he had quick hands.

Speaking of the timeout...How in the world did the refs NOT put more time back on the clock after that? It was clearly warranted.

A full half-second. It's on calls that like where I'm not sure if the rule is when he calls the TO or when the whistle is blown.

Its is just amazing watching Kidd on the court. The way he uses his mind is just amazing. The guy is pure genius and right now I dont think there is smarter player in the NBA....and honestly I have never seen someone like Kidd....the guy makes plays with his freaking mind.

I used to play pickup with a guy who was always 100% honest about calling his own travels. He'd usually just stop, set the ball on the ground, say "I traveled," and then walk back to the other end of the court.
Kinda weird.

Weird, but better than the guy who always calls "foul" when he misses a layup, even if there was no one within 5 feet of him.

I keep trying to call Defensive 3 seconds in my pickup games....rarely works.
I'm also the guy who calls the "holding Dirk while laying on his back, rooting him out with your lower body, and slapping him around the head" foul and I NEVER GET THAT ONE! Of course I play in a pick up game with a bunch of Thunder fans. Question answered.
