Maybe it's time to just blow it all up, now.
No one loves Dirk any more than I do. I've had season tickets since the day he was drafted, until I left town this year. I saw him looking lost in Reunion, and watched him drop fifty on Tim Thomas after the infamous kiss. I was there when he spit out a tooth and kept going. I saw him crushed when Nash left, and when we lost to Miami. And I got to see him get the ultimate revenge. Now, it pains me to say, that maybe the best thing he could do for us, is leave.
Put Dirk on any team in the playoffs now and they become instant favorites. We could get back a young stud, a pretty good mid 20's player and some decent picks. Or we could trade him to a bad team, take their last year's top pick, this year's lottery slot, and another 2 years down the line. With any luck, we'd be bad enough to get a top 5 pick of our own, then boom...we are young, talented and hungry.
If we can get Derron, I'd say go for it with Dirk. But if we don't, we will not be good enough to win it all before Dirk's window closes. If we let him go, we have a huge amount of money to shop next year, when the CBA starts forcing over the cap teams to have fire sales.
The front office says nothing is more valuable than flexibility...this is one way to get it. I'm not sure its the right way or that this is the time. Maybe next off season would be better. But anybody that gets Dirk now has a great one for at least 3 years...cut 33% off that and his value is way less.
While this may not be the time, the fact is, our talent pool is old and running on fumes. Trading Dirk could let us top it off in the next 2 years. Wouldn't it be fun to root for some young guns again? What do you think?

You don't trade a superstar in his prime, no matter what. You have better odds of catching lighting in a bottle with a supporting cast (like we did last year) than you do of finding the next superstar.
Even if you don't get DWill this year, you keep Dirk, you build a team, and you keep an eye on keeping your options open for the next superstar.

Minny traded KG, and they haven't been back since. Now KG wanted out, Dirk doesn't. I wouldn't do it.

How do you think upcoming free agents would think of the Mavs as an organization, trading away a guy that carried the franchise for 14 years?

Still, i think no player is bigger than the team. With that said, i'd hate it if they would trade him, but no need to even discuss it any further, as jthig backed me up in the other thread, he has a no trade clause in his contract, so yeah, pointless conversation.

Only reason you do it is for money and Cuban never would.
He owns the team AND the arena. If he blows it up and we suck for 15+ years, he loses out double. As long as he sells a moderate amount of tickets he can afford to spend more than the cap without dipping into the red.
theres plenty of reason for him to make drastic roster changes around Dirk to stay competitive, but there is absolutely no reason to retool. It hurts Cuban's pride, it hurts Cuban's pocketbook, it hurts the reputation of this franchise and more than anything there is no reason to.
A fraction of those who get NBA contracts ever play important minutes. Even fewer make an impact on a game. Still fewer can consistently impact a game. Dirk is in an even more rare group of players-- maybe 1 in 500million. Teams go for decades drafting in the lottery without finding a player with an impact like he makes. You trade him away and there is no guarantee that we'd be able to find anyone even close in the near future.

You do not trade away the guy with the statue out front.

Then you should know that Dirk has a no-trade clause and that he is going nowhere. Dirk will (because he wants to!) retire as a MAV no matter if (fake or real) Dirk fans like it or not.
And btw. even if you trade Dirk now, you won't find a better franchise player in the next ~3yrs than Dirk. Wake me up when Durant, Kobe, Lebron, Deron, Dwight, Wade, Paul and co. win a championship with our current team. It won't happen.
It is really funny how people expect from Dirk the same results like Kobe+Bynum+Gasol or Lebron+Wade+Bosh or Durant+Westbrook+Harden or Bird+Mchale+Parish... and if Dirk does not deliver...."let's get rid of him"....like an old horse.
absolutely disgusting.

I'm not dismissing this idea completely. But only if
1) The Mavs, despite every effort, completely strike out this summer, and we clearly don't have the tools to make a deep run, and
2) Dirk and Cuban talk it out and Dirk decides he wants a legit chance to contend for another ring which he wouldn't realistically be able to do here.
If, and only if, both those things are true, then it is indeed better to bottom out than to make Dirk suffer first round exits the rest of his career. But if there's a chance of competing, I hold on for dear life. Rebuilding isn't as easy as OKC made it look, it requires a lot of luck. I don't want to watch this team suck brutally for five years while Dirk shows up in another team's uni and destroys us.

OKC's window of opportunity is not as big as it looks. They better win now or they might end up like the MAVS in 2003....

They would have to throw in a draft pick or two before I trade Dirk for that collection.

Nah. Dirks only got two years left on his deal. He's even hinted that he'll retire after his contract is up. That frees 20 mil to nab a superstar.

Dirk is now approaching where Tim Duncan was 3 years ago. But the Spurs surrounded him with younger talent. They will be almost as good when TD retires. Our method was to surround Dirk with old talent. It worked great last year and it worked horribly this year. When Cuban made the decision not to sign Chandler, there were 3 top free agents available this off season. Now Howard and CP3 have taken themselves off the market, leaving only Derron. If we don't get him, we will still need a top flight PG and center and at least 1 wing player who can score and defend. I just don't see how we get all that talent with nothing to trade. I'm not hating on Dirk... Its just without a 2nd, younger superstar, I don't see how we get back to championship level.
Explain it to me.

Just enjoy watching the best player in Mavs history play his last years in Dallas. Watching Dirk is pure joy. He is a freaking artist out there. It's like watching Van Gogh paint a masterpiece. Surely that's got to be better than watching some lottery pick scrub it up.

i say keep dirk,,,,,, or to be more accurate, let dirk decide that. hes earned it.
as far as blowing up the team its a little late. maybe cuban didnt really blow it up but he certainly dismantled it pretty damn effectively. you want to let some major talent go to get new? the getting rid of talent happened last offseason and was replaced with the rediculous dream.
tyson, jj, peja, stevenson, butler, brewer (ok, not so much brewer), all played critical roles successfully at the highest level, and we replaced them with odom, carter, and who else? its harder to remember them when they suck in the spotlight,,,,, oh ya, west
and now that its going to be time to replace terry, kidd, ian, etc,,,,,,, i'd say your wish has already been granted.

Agree with this. It would have to be Dirk's wish and a mutual decision between he and Cuban. Even in a scenario that the Mavs strike out this summer I can't imagine Dirk doing anything other than be a good soldier and stick it out like Nash did with the Suns the last two years.

Some of us old-timers know that's not true. Watching Dirk go from Finals MVP to playing his last years on a lottery team would be more like watching Van Gogh cut off his own ear. The Mavs have to get him help. Call in Gauguin to paint the picture if DWill doesn't come.

Van Gogh? I think you can do better than that.
What he does is closer to Genghis Khan rampaging across the world with barbaric intensity. Dirk destroys people.
