I wouldn't call this the greatest, but it's one of my favs.
Recently speaking, the coin flip scene at the gas station from No Country for Old Men was pretty fantastic.

This would take some time to think about, but off the top of my head....I really like Celie and Nettie's reunion at the end ofThe Color Purple.
The "Baptism" scene in There Will Be Blood was also a thing of greatness.

Funniest scene ever?
Although, the actual scene I'm referring to doesn't start until 2 minutes into the clip (every shorter version I found was in another language...)

Best opening scene in a movie...
(it sure as hell prepares you for what's in store over the next 2 hours!)

SPOILER-SPOILER-SPOILER
The most beautiful scene EVER put to film - if this sequence doesn't bring a tear to your eye, then you have no soul...
***It's the last 10 minutes of The Fountain - it will have absolutely NO meaning to you if you haven't watched the rest of the movie, so I'm pretty much just posting this for those who have seen it***
This is why I watch movies...

If we're talking contiguous scenes that occur in one place at one specific time, I'll have to go with the shower scene from Psycho--
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdrDpELNbks
Another classic is the battle on the Steps from Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin--
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euG1y0KtP_Q
However, if we expand the discussion to scenes that cover simultaneous actions in multiple places, then the baptism scene and surrounding montage at the end of the Godfather takes the cake--

I know that at least one of these is a RickRoll, and based on that I can't look at any of them. Thank you Internet, thank you for ruining my life.

Funny - I thought about doing that, but I decided to put scenes from a few of my favorite movies up instead (The Big Lebowski, Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, The Fountain...)
In addition to those, I think this might actually be the sexiest scene ever put on film (sorry - no nudity!)

To each, their own... I can understand if The Fountain bored you - it's a slow, artistic movie that tackles the topic of death & eternal life from a unique perspective (and that perspective doesn't have any laughs, boobies or explosions...)
The Big Lebowski, on the other hand, is probably the smartest comedy ever made - it has a bit of something for everyone...

I'm far from being a completely unsophisticated moviegoer, but its pace made me lose interest. Going back and forth in the timelime made sure I fell asleep faster than taking 3 excedrin PM's.

I know this isn't the general movie discussion thread, but the Fountain was just a fountain of cheese. I'd call it a cheese sandwich, but that'd only be true if you replaced the bread with blocks of cheese, and replaced the mustard and mayo with cheese. Cheese is great, but not when you try to claim that your cheesy cheesiness is better than a real meal.

I don't think you understood the movie completely - there was no timeline... There was the present (death), his reflection of the past (life), and the fictional story that his wife was writing (the fountain of youth)... This was a story about coming to grips with our mortality - we're all going to die & nothing we do can prevent that (as obvious as that sounds, most people have trouble accepting that inevitability even when we come face-to-face with it...)
I thought the movie was a lot more enjoyable the second time I watched it because I understood how the 3 stories actually related to each other - I could focus more on the symbolism & imagery, rather than trying to piece together the plot...
The Fountain was more like an opera than a play - it's meant to provoke emotions, rather than thoughts...

It's been a little while since I watched it, Underdog, so I don't remember completely, but I did get the point of it. But somewhat along those lines, I'd rather watch Jacob's Ladder :-P

Sorry for derailing the thread previously. I hope this gets it back on track

Hell yeah - Jacob's Ladder was an amazing movie too! People think Shawshank Redemption (excellent movie) was Tim Robbins' best performance ever, but I think his role in Jacob's Ladder was a lot more impressive & challenging overall...

Agreed but the plot was pretty non-existent. I'm a plot, dialogue and characters guy. I loved Requiem For a Dream though.

a few fave scenes --
Opening sequence in Apocalypse Now -- helicopters, crazy Sheen, Doors....absolutely sets the tone for the movie.
The dinner scene in Texas Chainsaw Massacre -- southern hospitality at it's most insane...
"Stuck in the middle with you" scene from Reservoir Dogs...
The Jennifer Connelly scene from Requiem for a Dream, as previously mentioned by BBL
The Life of Brian -- "Always look on the bright side of life...." You can't watch that scene without whistling along.

that one came to my mind as well -- not as good as the Jennifer Connelly drug addict - lesbian scene in requiem for a dream, but darn good stuff.
