Posturing
My guess as to why the Jamison deal was done. At least I think this will work (PE, KG) let me know.
LA wants expiring contracts, draft picks, and youth to build around Kobe.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jamison to Wizards for #5, Stackhouse, Laetner
Stackhouse, Fortson to Philidelphia for Glenn Robinson
Robinson, Walker, Laetner, #5, (maybe Howard) to LA for Shaq, Cook
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That is 30M in expiring contracts with some talent, #5, and if we have to (Howard) for Shaq, and moving their longest contract in Cook.
Payton, Kobe, Robinson, Walker, Laetner. I don't buy the Nash SNT, unless Nowitzki is sent there as well.
I think Philly might do it, to get a rebounder in Fortson to pair with Stackhouse and AI, Dalembert filling the middle.
Snow, AI, Stackhouse, Fortson, Dalembert
Dallas lineup:
Shaq, Bradley
Nowitzki, Najera
Finley, (Howard)
Daniels, Delk
Nash, Stefansson

RE:Posturing
If you package Stackhouse with anybody else, you have to wait 60 days. If you then turned around and wanted to package Robinson in another trade, you have to wait another 60 days.

not sure if thats true KG. read somewhere today that if dallas were to turn around and ship stack and/or l8ner off today, they would be allowed to be part of a package. otherwise its a 60 day wait.

RE: Posturing
It's hard to think that Philly would want anything to do with Stackhouse. Few teams do. One team that makes sense is the Knicks, who could give back some expiring contracts:
Stackhouse for Mutombo, Othella Harrington works under the cap. Both players have one more year on their contracts. The one thing the Mavs would probably need to facilitate a trade to L.A. is youth and size. We now have the #5 pick and Josh Howard to throw at them. If we pick up these guys, we'd have an abundance of big men with good contracts to throw at the Lakers.
Package those guys along with Antoine Walker and Christion Laettner, both with expiring contracts and the Kobe rebuilding era has begun.
The Mavericks new expiring contracts:
Walker - $14.6M
Laettner - $6.2M
Mutombo - $4.5M
Harrington - $3.2M
Total - $28.5M, well within 15% of the magic number.

There is not any type of grace period that you can use but you can add new partners to the trade up until the moment it is approved by the NBA office.

That was in the Sefko article this morning, I believe. But what Sefko's saying doesn't conflict with what I said. You CAN deal Stackhouse and Laettner, because you just acquired both of them. You just can't add anything to them.

RE:Posturing
If NY would take Stackhouse for Othello, Mutombo
and Philly would take Delk, Fortson for Robinson (not sure they would do this)
And Dallas can resign Nash, and Daniels for the MLE.
Then use the #5 on Biedrins.
The lineup for next year would be:
Biedrins, Bradley, Mutombo
Nowitzki, Najera, Harrington
Howard, Robinson, Walker
Finley, Daniels
Nash,
IR: TAW, Laettner, Stefansson
And at the end of the year. You would save 14.5 Walker, 11.5 Robinson, 4.5 Mutombo (team option), 6.2 Laettner, 3.2 Harrington
Nearly 40 M coming off the books.
And the year after:
Biedrins, Bradley
Nowitzki, Najera
Finley, Howard
Daniels
Nash, Stefansson
With a massively smaller budget.

RE: Posturing
Expiring contracts will help Orlando rebuild. I've gotta think that instead of getting back a star player, they're priority should be the of dumping the Grant Hill and Juwan Howard contracts. If we pull this deal off, we'll be in a great position to steal McGrady away from the Rockets.
Hill - $14.5
McGrady - $14.5
Howard - $5.4
Give me the name of a team, other than the Mavericks, who is capable of sending $35M worth of expiring contracts to the Magic. You can't, because there isn't one.

RE: Posturing
Why the fascination with Biedrins? I don't understand it. 30% free throw shooter? Tall, skinny...doesn't sound like the Mavs solution to anything.
