Default Mavs need to go after Bonzi

Kings Sign Salmons, Will Let Wells Walk
24th July, 2006 - 8:50 pm
NBA.com - The Sacramento Kings signed free agent guard John Salmons to a multi-year contract, it was announced by Kings’ President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie. The deal is speculated to use the Kings full mid-level exception

“We’re excited to add a versatile player like John to our team,” said Petrie. “He can play three positions. We feel he’s still an emerging player in the NBA. He’ll add to the youth and overall skill level of our backcourt, and I’m really looking forward to watching him play for the Kings.”

Geoff Petrie appeared on KHTK-AM show Sportsline 1140 with Grant Napear and Mike Lamb to announce the deal and also clarify that the team would no longer pursue re-signing Bonzi Wells

Mavs shouldnt waste their money on Deveon George. if they got bonzi it would definatley shore up that thin 2 guard spot they have with a proven driver/slasher/scorer that bonzi wells is. plus, bonzi's a spur killer. i just get a little nervous when thing about having eiter a rook or buck start at the 2 spot…this line would be is scary.

I wouldn't mind seeing us look into Bonzi as an option but I doubt we'll consider him much based on what type of contract he wants.

He is a solid player though..can rebound extremely well, defend, and play in the post. Just hope he doesn't end up a Western competitor.

We've already used half our mid level. The only way we're getting Bonzi is if we SnT for him.

Can we also trade Dirk for someone that is as good as dirk but is paid a lot less, and get a quality position player from the deal too? That would be suh-weet!

If we really wanted Bonzi the obvious trade, in my opinion, would be to move Stackhouse. Given Stack's big salary for next year it might be possible to do this if we were willing to sign on for a long term big contract. I am not sure this is the best idea given that Bonzi will want his minutes.... probably more than even Stack. We still have to get Howard and Dirk renewed, so another long-term contract seems like a bad idea to me.

F bonzi wells. I want no part of that douchebag on this team. It's amazing that the guy has so much talent, yet gets shipped off, traded, or not re-signed everywhere he goes. Kind of reminds me of JR Rider...he had tons of talent as well if you will remember.

What's up with Bonzi? Is he playing in Houston next season? He could be our big 2 with a post game?

If you could get the Bonzi that showed up in last year's playoffs, that would be awesome.

Unfortunately, that's not verylikely.

Bonzi can play and be a force in the right system --- not surprising that he didn't fit in too well with a disciplinarian like JVG (considering he couldn't really co-exist with Fratello, either).

Question is what type of shape he is in after sulking for the past year about the $30 million he threw away...

Edit: When healthy/motivated, he can certainly give a team the type of player that can take advantage of mismatches in the post --- outside of Steven Jackson or Matt Barnes, I'm don't think any of GSW's perimeter defenders could have handled the Bonzi that played against the Spurs in the 2006 playoffs...

LOL
considering dirk is one of the top 10 players in the world who exactly do you want us to get? maybe if we trade our entire rest of the team we can get one of them and then use our 3 second round picks to fill up the last 3 spots :-P

I stand by this post from last year. Nothing has changed with this douche, nothing ever will.

Agree with many of you. But if he is cheap then why not. He can still play. I can tell you one thing for sure. He would have been better than anything we had coming of the bench against GS besides Stack.

I like the idea of adding Bonzi to the mix. He's a strong 2-guard that can post up and push around other guards. I have a feeling GS will show some strong interests in him, and considering their style of play, I'm sure Bonzi would see GS as an opportunity to get his career back on track.

Mavs have a reputation of taking some troubled players and getting them on the right path. If there is any truth to that, it left with Nellie. Look at his squad of misfits.

I don't think Avery can deal with that quite as well.

First we couldn't afford him. Second the guy has quit on his last 2 teams. Do we really need another guy on this team who up and quits when things don't go his way????????
