Dallas Mavericks could be without Howard through end of month
01:27 PM CDT on Tuesday, March 10, 2009
By DAVID MOORE / The Dallas Morning News
dmoore@dallasnews.com
The possibility exists that an injured left ankle could keep Josh Howard out of the Dallas Mavericks' lineup through the end of the month.
Howard is not with the Mavericks on a crucial four-game road trip that begins Tuesday night in Phoenix. He remained in Dallas on Monday along with trainer Casey Smith to review the results of his latest tests. The specialist advised that Howard needed more tests to determine the severity of the injury and the best course of action.
No timetable has been established by the club other than to concede Howard won't play against the Suns or Wednesday night in Portland. Mavericks officials are hopeful he will be back sooner rather than later. But they temper that optimism with the knowledge this injury has plagued Howard for much of the season and could keep him sidelined for weeks rather than days.
Howard first sprained the ankle in mid-November, an injury that required a boot and kept him off the court for 11 games. He injured the ankle again in last week's loss to Oklahoma City and sat out the second half.
Howard returned two nights later to score 29 points and grab seven rebounds in an emotional win over San Antonio. His limp was noticeable at times during the game and he aggravated the injury again in Thursday's loss to New Orleans.
Howard did not play against Washington. He has 18 games this season – 12 with the ankle and six with a sprained left wrist.
"We're trying to get to the bottom of Josh's pain as quickly as possible," said Donnie Nelson, the Mavericks' president of basketball operations. "Although there’s no timetable at this point, Josh and our medical staff are working feverishly to get him back in uniform.
"We all know how important every game is down the stretch."

I may agree with you somewhat on that, but that award goes to Half-Man Half-Season Mr. Tracy McGrady!

I give Howard props for playing on that ankle but I wonder if it did more harm than good by trying to get some of those wins instead of resting him.
If we're to have any chance in the playoffs he needs to be healthy at least.

We shouldn't wish for our boys to miss the playoffs.
if dirk wants to make the playoffs, then I wish for our beloved Mavs to make the playoffs.
And I think Dirk, although fully aware that this team isn't a contender, wishes to make the playoffs.
besides, a .01% chance at winning a title is better than a 0% chance.
"so youre saying theres a chance right"

You gotta love people calling Josh soft after he powered through a clearly bum ankle to help us beat San Antonio. Very fickle.
And I'm changing the thread title. Let's try to be a bit more accurate with stuff like this.

Ain't nothing fickle about me calling Howard soft, my man. That dude is freakin' fragile, in many ways.

Come on, peeps. Let's quit it. Josh isn't bionic but he's not soft.
As for the playoffs, missing it doesn't help us any so let's make it.

The Mavs are a better team without Josh....we saw that against Wash and tonite against the Suns. More energy, more hustle, smart play overall
I hope hes kept out or comes of the bench.

Yeah, let's just tank the rest of the year. The Mavs can't beat any decent teams on the road without Howard.

Missing the playoffs in this particular year wouldn't even provide much of a benefit. This is the weakest draft in some years. I'd rather lose in the first round than not even be there, regardless, but that's especially the case when the Mavs have hardly any chance of getting a contributor in the draft.

I think its the right move to let him get the rest. I doubt he'll need a lot of games before the playoffs start to get back into the swing of things, at least I don't think he'll need that much.
Just get him at 100% with fresh legs and energy to hopefully burn.

Maybe this means the Mavs will hit a win streak, since that's what happened last time he was out for a significant amount of time.
It's not like their record has been better with him. So who cares?

Oh god. I take back what I said. Tape an aspirin on it Josh! Suck it up. Get your butt out there.
I really really wish Carlisle would quit it with George. Put Green in there, let Singleton play the 3. It's not like they don't have other options.

I can't believe some of the things guys are saying in here about Howard. Yet, some of you guys are the 1st ones to want to trade him for a teams best player lol. Funny how that works. We need Josh. I don't care if he sucks in the 4th. We could use his 1st half scoring. Josh is still a big part of this Mavs team and if the Mavs are going to even think about getting out of the 1st round they're going to need a healthy Josh.

I want to him out of here, but not at the expense of not getting anything back in return. Some people on here just want him to "heal up" and go away in a sense. I don't think that's really the best way to go. It's going to be too much to ask night in and night out from the guys. It'll catch up to them eventually if he was off in exile, so to say.
If he's still here, let him get healthy and come back recharged. Now in the offseason...that's a totally different situation.
