See kids, the Mavs choke when Dirk ISN'T in the game.
I never like to use the word "choke", but my goodness, this was Exhibit A.

Thats why the average moron thinks we are a choke team, because we always do that on that games....

Barea & JET only had to make 1-3 FT's to ice the game and they spared it up...
I can't wait for Josh Howard to come back...

1. Erik Dampier is playing like it is a contract year, too bad he didn't play like this for the last 4 years.
2. Free throws would have won this game.
3. I am sick of seeing this much J.J.
4. Marion? I am ready to see some of that preseason game, not this, "I can't handle a pass near my knees".
5. Am I the only one ready to see Josh Howard????

Actually we rarely do that. We won a very high percentage of close games last year.

On the bright side, we were one made free throw away from taking down a fully healthy New Orleans team on the second night of a back to back with no Josh, no Drew Gooden, no Quinton Ross, and no Dirk for the last 2+ minutes of the game (and overtime).
Moral victories against division opponents suck (or don't exist, maybe) but I'm very excited for the prospects of this team right now.

What a freaking rollercoaster ride in 24hours...
But im going also with almost beating NO without 4 players.
And Boobie was a sparkle.

I know most of the board has been singing praises of Marion since the season began, and I'm as high on what I think he can bring us as anyone, but he's been a bit disappointing to me. Defensively he's done some great things, but offensively, he sure seems to miss a lot of easy shots and has awful handles (Exhibit A: 5 TO tonight). What bothers me about him more than anything is that we seem to have long stretches where he doesn't touch the ball, and if there's one thing that Laker game showed me, it's that the JKidd/Matrix pick & roll is a dangerous weapon. Again. Big Marion fan, not hating, but there's certainly some work to be done integrating him.
Dampier had the game of his life tonight, and he's having a terrific season. A lot of it was because the Hornets big men left him open repeatedly, but he certainly worked for plenty of those 14 boards, and he had a couple nice dunks as well, really an intimidator out there tonight, especially with the 3 blocks. I'm happy for the big fella. Of course, at this rate, his contract is going to end up becoming guaranteed for next year, but that's a problem we can worry about later.
Dirk's 20 point streak comes to an end, and I doubt anyone disagrees that his off-night is totally forgivable after last night. We certainly would have had a chance in OT with him on the floor, but after Peja hit the three and with Dirk on the bench for the rest of the way, I think we all knew it was over.
Boobie sighting! Surprise starter tonight, and did surprisingly well. Didn't force the issue much except for that one three he missed. Had a nice pass for an open three and showed flashes of the incredible speed and range we know he has. 9 points and an assist in his first 13 minutes of the season. I'll take it.
JET finally found his shot and had a monster fourth...until it counted and he choked at the line. I think we can all agree JET's as clutch as they come typically, but he certainly has a nasty habit of missing pressure free throws.
Honestly, I thought JJB did some nice things tonight. I mean, he took his typical stupid JJB shots, but he did about as well on Paul as I could have expected anyone on our team to do (and Barea's height disadvantage is kind of negated against Paul; CP3's not a big guy by any stretch). Of course, then other events that I'm not going to discuss took place that are going to blossom into a board-wide "Trade Barea" campaign by tomorrow. It is what it is.
Again. Some bright spots. Damp's off to a terrific start to the season. Roddy did some nice things. JET's being JET again. Kidd showed last night was no fluke and was draining 3's again. And all that added up to the game being 100% in our hands...
EDIT: And MAN, has the injury bug bitten us. Good thing we're as deep as we are, but Gooden, Ross, and especially Howard need to hurry their asses back into the lineup.

If Dirk doesn't foul out (on a f*cking touch foul) he hits that technical FT and game over.
F*ck that.
JJB should have to carry Damp's luggage for the rest of the season.

I think the Hornets PA adds an interesting twist in the discussion on whether homophobic slurs may have an occasional use.

Role players should not cost you games. Yet JJB is a role player (even thought Carisle doesnt play him like one) and he cost us this game.
And why was JJB guarding Chris Paul the whole game? He is a defensive liability, your are supposed to hide him on a poor offensive player not Chris freaking Paul

Jkidd missing two layups...I can understand
Jet missing two FT...I can understand after carrying us through the 4th(although he should have made em)
But WTF Barea!Jackin up 3's,overdribbling,not going to Jet, and thats just some of the things he did to piss me off along with posting up Marion when he can't take care of the ball.
When does Josh get back?

I'm more pissed about JJ jacking up those 3s early in the shot clock than I am about him missing the FTs.

This team has some question marks, but I'm inspired by what I see...
Both our losses were under acceptable circumstances against good teams... We lost against the Wizards because we were looking ahead to the Lakers (which paid off) and we lost against the Hornets in OVERTIME because we were severely short-handed down the stretch (which tells me we could beat them at full strength...)
Plus, look at our wins against the Lakers, Clippers and Jazz - we did all that without our 2nd/3rd best player, Josh Howard... This team is finding ways to get tough wins and they're not even close to 100% yet!

JJB 2-6 on 3pt shots... no matter how many good things you say about JJB, I still feel like he has no business taking 6 3pt attempts in a game.
JET scored 35, very much on par with Paul's 39. The difference? West (35 pts) gets to abuse Dirk and holds him to 12. Sigh.

I'm definitely excited about this team's prospects, but it sucks to watch them lose a game like that.

3 more years of Jason Kidd's increasingly senile game. should have traded him when we had the chance. he's scared to take a layup. one was a brick and the other barely grazed rim. and got picked on Peja's tying three. and there were other less than stellar moments. tough start to the season for him

Agree with this 100%! A team that ran us off the floor two years ago showed tonight that at full strength they can barely handle a Dallas squad that's tired, depleted, and has two main stars struggle throughout the game in Dirk and Marion. After this all I can think about is what can this team do when healthy? If Damp continues to play this way, and Josh can be a factor when he gets back. This team is going to be really fun to watch!

Bobby Brown is a scrub. He only looks good when he has D-Leaguers like JJB trying to guard him.

Just wanted to point out that out of all that happened in that endgame, Thiggy is the only one who remarked what a big play it was that we gave up the easy layup so defenselessly when we were up five in the last minute. Guys, that is EXACTLY what happened against Wade in the Finals. Good call, Thiggy.
And apart from that, no one at all has yet to comment on the turnover we made when we inbounded the ball with 6-some-odd seconds left in a tie game. No mention of that at all! We didn't even get a shot off!
I can only hope that you are channeling anger toward your least favorite players because it is therapeutic. Because you sure aren't making a lot of good sense.

Yes, that turnover by Kidd was inexcusable. I don't know why he thought lazily lobbing a pass into a double-teamed Terry would work.

In fairness to Humphries, West totally pushed off with his right arm to get that layup. and yes Kidd's turnover was unconscionable. that's some of the "fear" i referred to regarding Kidd in close games.

Kidd made a few horrendous passes this game... and Marion was horrible. Dirk scored 12 and fouled out before overtime... and we STILL should have won.
This team is going to kick some ass this year.

All they had to do was make thoes free throws and the Mavs would be sitting at 4-1 right now, the only thing I'm happy about is that the team didn't give up after Dirk fould out, I know I will be happy when Josh comes back so we can see less of that damm 3 guard line up....go Mavs!!

In the end it all comes back to Josh. Once he's back the minutes will be distributed better amongst the back court players. JJ won't play as many minutes as he has been. Once this team is healthy then we can begin to hold guys more accountable. Until then I can't give them a hard time when they are showing that even when tired, depleted, and everyone not playing well they can still run with anybody. This loss was bad, but wasn't this New Orleans team running us off the floor a couple of years ago? Now all they can do is steal a game even with all those disadvantages we had! This Dallas team is going to be scary when healthy!
