With the end of the decade coming up shortly, I thought it'd be fun to think about the great players who have donned a Mavericks jersey from 2000-2009. So, how about we name the 10 greatest Mavericks players of this decade.
Here are mine:
10. Erick Dampier
9. Devin Harris
8. Nick Van Exel
7. Jerry Stackhouse
6. Jason Kidd
5. Josh Howard
4. Jason Terry
3. Steve Nash
2. Michael Finley
1. Dirk Nowitzki

Thank Mark Cuban, for caring enough to provide the Dallas Metroplex with one of the top teams in the league...regardless of what upper NBA Management thinks about you and this organization...we feel as though this was the decade for the Mavs Championship and we look forward to Stern handing you the Championship trophy, soon.

What a sad decade it must have been when Damp is in the top 5 on many of these lists.

That's only because you under appreciate him. He's had a huge positive impact on this team. If not for him, we'd still be awful on defense.

I'll have to think about my list, but I'm really surprised that Stackhouse is being placed ahead of Van Exel by most folks who have posted thus far. Strange.

10. Jerry Stackhouse (brought a toughness the team needed/ Murphy was always wrong about him)
9. Nick Van Exel (loved the F'em attitude)
8. Antawn Jamison (How good could have have been with the Mavs if Walker wasn't taken??)
7. Shawn Bradley (way too much size/talent for a guy who never LOVED the game)
6. Jason Kidd
5. Josh Howard
4. Jason Terry
3. Michael Finley
2. Steve Nash (I absolutely loved the guy till he lied and took CASH over team) Now he can suck it.
1. Dirk Nowitzki (best Mav all-time)

Any list that doesn't start with Dirk, Nash, and Finley is retarded enough, but Stackhouse?

This. Dirk is #1, I'd probably put Nash at #2, and then I think you could arguably make a case for Kidd in the 3-5 range.
*edit* I see now why you edited this, but i still think you're right.

Kidd's short tenure holds him back IMO. He's only been here for 2 years.
I sort of looked at cumulative 2000-2009 stats, considered their winning percentages while here and then 'big game' moments - which helps guys like Stack, NVE and JET.
If he had 4+ years going for him, I'd be more inclined to move him into the Fin/Nash tier.

Yeah I wasn't taking the "decade" part of the question into account. Because if the entire career (as a Mav) is taken into account, Kidd is above Nash on my list.

The top 5 are clear cut for me...the bottom 5 are pretty interchangeable IMO:
10. Stackhouse
9. Van Exel
8. Harris
7. Howard
6. Damp
5. Kidd
4. Terry
3. Finley
2. Nash
1. Dirk

For what it's worth, here's the top 10 list from ESPNDallas.com:
Quote:
10. Dampier
9. Stackhouse
8. Harris
7. Kidd
6. NVE
5. Howard
4. Terry
3. Finley
2. Nash
1. Dirk
|
http://espn.go.com/blog/dallasmaveri...test-mavericks
For me, that list has Finley too high and Kidd too low. And I do think that Dampier around 9 or 10 is very fair. He's had a hugely positive impact on this team's interior defense.

Nash is HIGHLY overrated...but hey, that's just me. I was actually glad to see him leave, felt that the Mavs became a better team by getting rid of him.
He's an offensive sideshow highlight real, but a serious defensive liability...he's perhaps a notch better than JJ Berea.
Would anyone care to debate that the Mavs are or are not a better team without Nash?
Again, on offense he's amongst the best at his position, but on Defense, he's horrible...that is why I don't consider him in the top half of the Mavs All Decade team.

I think Finely needs to #2. He was the man in dallas for a while.

I originally had Finley at 5 on my list but then I went with sentimental value for what he did as a Maverick as a whole...so maybe it's not a legit list, but he hovers in the 3-5 range for me.
I would keep Damp #6 on my list...you can say all the negative things you want about him, but he's been underrated as a Maverick. I think once you get past 4 or 5, it just gets into personal preference.

I know!!! I've been totally busy, some of it being a pain...some of it pretty damn good!
I finally got to watch some Mavs basketball for the first time this past weekend, so hopefully I'll be able to get back into the flow of it to start off the new year

10. Antawn Jamison - What Dalmations said.. Only one season but I don't think we could have asked any more from him, given the circumstances.
9. Jason Kidd - I know I'll get killed for saying this, but frankly I'm not sure he necessarily belongs on the list at all. This season is technically "next decade," right? So based on the season and a half he played for us from 99-00 to 08-09, there isn't really much there. We were a much better team in 07-08 with Devin Harris than we were with Jason Kidd (nothing will change my mind about this). I don't want to start the debate, but I was against the trade when it happened and though I've come a long way from hating it as much as I used to, I still think we'd have been better the last two seasons without it. That being said, he's one of the best point guards ever and he's played very well for us since coming back.
8. Erick Dampier - Underperformed for the majority of his contract, but still underrated
7. Jerry Stackhouse - I know there are plenty of negatives with Stackhouse, but he was a very important player on some of the very best Mavs teams. I do believe that he gave us much needed "toughness" and maybe it's just selective memory but he usually seemed to hit his shots when we really needed them.
6. Devin Harris - Maybe I overrate him a bit, but he was the point guard for a 67 win team and a very important rotation player for the finals run. I think he would have continued to develop into one of the top point guards in the west if we'd kept him, but regardless, I think he did enough for us to warrant this spot.
5. Josh Howard - The most controversial Maverick of the 90s. One of four Mavs to make an all-star team in the decade. Regardless of what you think of him, I can't imagine there's a good argument against him being either the 4th or 5th best Maverick of the decade.
4. Jason Terry - He always seemed to kill us when he played for the Hawks, so I was really excited when we traded for him (Well I was pissed that Nash was leaving, but I really liked Jason Terry). A very good player and seems to be a great guy and teammate.
3. Michael Finley - The only time I was ever embarrassed to be a Mavs fan was when he was booed at the AAC in the playoffs against the Spurs. Did far too much for this team to ever be disrespected like that.
2. Steve Nash - My favorite player until he left. I hold no animosity over his departure. It would be different if he'd left over a few million dollars, but the Suns were clearly more committed to getting him than we were. I don't think anyone would have stayed under those circumstances.
1. Dirk Nowitzki - The best Maverick ever.

The 2-6 is extremely hard.
(I consider the decade to be the start of the 2000-2001 season to the end of this season)
Terry: played 6 years in this decade. Longer than Nash and Finley. He didn't have as high of a peak as both of those guys but with his help the Mavs went farther in the playoffs than with the other two guys.
Nash: played only 4 years here. His stats are much better than Terry's. And he was on the team that "beat Utah"... which was a monumental feat at the time. Of course he was also a big reason why they couldn't beat Sac.... but he was very talented in his short time here.
Finley: played 5 years here. He is the second best Mav imo. His best days were in the 90's. But he was a huge reason why they beat Utah. He was the 2nd best offensive weapon the Mavs had throughout the decade.

If we're talking post-"Three Js" days to current day, Finley is without a doubt #2 in my mind. But if it's just this decade, I think Nash is number 2.

If we had Dampier, Nash's defense wouldn't have been as exposed as it was. Dirk at center with any point guard is going to have problems defensively. Lafrentz and Bradley weren't much better defensively.
