Lets face it: Dirk will opt out
He may resign with us. but he definitly will opt out to see whats happing this offseason and to force cuban to make the rights things gonna happen.
fire Rick,
stop playing jjb over roddy,
bring a superstar to dallas,
resign haywood
He said after the game that he will look at his options

i actually wouldnt be that shocked if dirk did opt out and go to ny,chicago or elsewhere.
Cuban has stated that he has lost millions and millions on the mavs and a 3-4yr contract worth close to 100mil may not be what he may wanna do.

Dirk said he would finish out his contract here.
If he decided to opt-out, that would be the first time he ever lied publicly...

Barkley already covered this: Dirk ain't walking away from over $20M. He'll sign a couple of years' extension before any "Will he test the FA market" drama starts up because he's a class act, loyal to the team.

he probably should. but he wont
lets face it hes too loyal and he doesnt want to win a title elsewhere
either he wins one in dallas or doesnt win one.
im a little sick and tired of hearing all of their bullshit after they get beaten in round 1.
'we ran into a tough team' 'their not your typical 7 seed'
the fuckin suns show more heart. the thunder showed me defense.
they just didnt wanna win, this team needs help, its time to blow it up or get a real 2 and 5

Cubans commitment to Kidd and Marion wont make Dirk opt out. Dirk is classy.

Did Barkley really say that? Because that's horribly misinformed. The smart business decision would be to op out and sign a new max deal before the new collective bargaining agreement happens.
I don't think it's out of the question that Dirks opts out, but if it happens it will be a situation where the Mavs are very involved in the decision and there's a plan on how he's going to re-sign.
Dirk's not going anywhere.

The one thing that worries me about Dirk is that he is just the kind of guy to say "screw it" to the dollars and go chase that championship that is all he desires anymore. I mean, think about it, if he were willing to take the MLE, he could basically name the champion next year, right?

When have you ever seen a superstar of Dirk's status take the MLE?
If Dirk wanted a fresh start to chase a championship, he'd probably go to a place like OKC or Miami where he could play with another bona fide superstar.

Actually, Dirk seems more of the type to take less money to stay in Dallas, so Cuban is more willing to invest that money in other areas.
For example, a trade where we get assets but have to take on a bad contract.

So he has a chance to win a ring with decent teammates and an owner that Stern doesn't loathe.

I would.
Do you have any idea how cheap and money grubbing our (Bulls) owner is?
He's like the inverse of Cuban.
We (bulls) lead the league in attendance every year since 1993, and yet after Michael retires, we spend next to nothing, many years, with the likes of Ron Mercer as a #1 option.
Jerry Rheinsdorf is a cheap, cheap b@stard.

I think he'd be rather dumb to exercise the player option with the CBA looming and his age hitting some high numbers. Freakin' Manu just got 40 mil for 3 years and Dirk is much more valuable than him. He should be able to lock in a longterm contract with some team.

This. People who think Dirk will stay because of the money (Charles) don´t have a clue. Dirk probably thinks he has more than enough money allready. He´d happily play the next couple years for nothing if that "guarantees" him a shot at the ring. I think the best fit would be Orlando.

Well everyone in the end thinks about the money, it would not be human nature to do so. If dirk signed say a 3 year contract then he could then shop himself around to win a title. If he's willing to play a backup role which he may not have much of a problem doing when he gets older.

Dirk & Dwight?
I'd root for that team when they're not playing the Mavs...

Orlando doesn't really make a lot of sense to me. It'd have to be a sign and trade since they are over the cap and there are no assets in Orl that match up for Dallas.

imagine the horror if Dirk wanted a championship as bad as he says and that he'd sign with the Spurs! Ouch! Food for thought.

I'm honestly not sure right now. I can't say I'd blame him if he did opt out. It's been a decade now and there is still no championship to show for it. I do think Dirk is a loyal guy and I think it would mean more to him if he won a championship here, but it's more likely he wins a title somewhere else.
It'd be extremely tough to lose Dirk though. He's the greatest thing to ever happen to this Mavs franchise so it'd be a shot to the gut for sure.

Signing a short term contract to win a title is cheap. It's almost like you didn't earn it. I hope he has more dignity than that. Do you think Barkley, Malone and Reggie Miller, to name a few, feel any less fullfilled?

Are you talking about the same Malone who took a paycut so he could try to win a ring with the Lakers?

Or the same Malone that opted to retire rather than win a ring with the Spurs?

In the sixties, I made love to many, many women. Often outdoors. In the mud and the rain. And it's possible a man slipped in. There would be no way of knowing.
