2010 Mavs Summer League
Quote:
Mavs taking 7-4 Senegalese project to Vegas
June, 28, 2010

By Jeff Caplan
The Dallas Mavericks' Summer League squad will be quite the spectacle in Las Vegas from July 9-18.
The team will, of course, be headlined by Roddy Beaubois and first-round draft pick Dominique Jones.
But, of neck-craning interest will be 7-foot-4 project Moussa Seck, a native of Senegal, who was with the Mavs last summer, but was so inexperienced as basketball player, didn't play. Seck will be joined by Saint Mary's big man -- in stature and personality -- 6-11 Omar Samhan.
Another attention grabber is Harvard point guard Jeremy Lin, who is attempting to become the first American-born Asian player to make it in the NBA.
Second-round pick in 2008 Shan Foster, who has been playing overseas, will also play on the Summer League team.
A group of players, many with local ties, will be trying out for the squad Monday and Tuesday at the American Airlines Center. They include:
G, Jermaine Beal, 6-3 (Vanderbilt, from DeSoto)
F Roderick Flemings, 6-5 (Hawaii, from DeSoto)
G, Kelvin Lewis, 6-4 (Houston, from North Crowley)
G, Jamel White, 6-4 (Texas Wesleyan)
F, Zivonko Buljan (TCU)
F, Mouhammad Faye (SMU)
F, Eric Tramiel (North Texas)
F, Andre Emmett, 6-5 (Texas Tech 2004, played in Europe, S. America)
F, Larry Owens, Oral Robers (Tulsa, played in D-League)
G, Tony Crocker (Oklahoma)
G-F, Derrick Byars (Vanderbilt)
G, Dwight Lewis, 6-5 (USC)

I've liked Jermaine Beal's game since he hung 30 on Dunbar as a freshman. I hope he makes it.
Also if anybody missed the note a few weeks back, all summer league games will be shown live on ch. 21 this year. No need to pay for the league pass stream.

Calathes is under contract for another year. They wouldn't let him play last year, not surprising that they won't let him play this year either.

I really like Samham he is physical, plays hard, plays with emotion, swagger confidence, has a good medium range jumper but at NBA level he is a liability defensively.

Only 1 other PG on the roster. Hopefully we'll see lots of Roddy at the 1 running the show.

We would get a lot of Roddy running the show if there were 8 PG's on the roster. He's the star.

Just summer league, not sure how far he will got with us. No commitment either way, we just pay him for time of service. He can actually just pick up and walk away in the middle of the summer league. Reasoning usually another team gives him a guaranteed contract for the upcoming season, but his braintrust felt Dallas' summer league team would give him the most exposure, hey and if he does well, we offer him something....usually a training camp invite and a make good contract.

The kid is not legit NBA center size, he does not have the quicks to play the 4. The guy has a huge heart, he's come a long way. His first choice of college turned him away because of his SAT's. Then he came into college way, way out of shape, the kid works. He has great feet on the post, 4 years of hard work shows. Athletically the speed and size isn't there, but who knows the guy is a tireless worker. IMO D-Leaguer and eventually Europe.

6'11" 265? That's not legit NBA size? I thought he problem was his quickness...he's slow and unathletic. Either way, he's a good scorer in the post. Scrappy.

People say the same exact things about Al Jeffeson who is 6'10'' 265. Maybe people think you have to be 7 feet minimum to play center.

Shaq and Yao kinda skewed everybody's expectations of the position...
(and a 7'0" PF like Dirk certainly doesn't help that perspective!)

How you play and what kind of physical tools you have is important. Jefferson is a below the rim player and is not a good defensive player. What you call him is irrelevant.

Eh. I've been thinking this for a while, but never really expressed it specifically in a post. I'm not going to disagree, Carlisle didn't find enough minutes for Roddy. Even being a rookie, Beaubois made stuff happen. Mainly, he scored. For a team that never really found that #2 guy to match with Dirk, Beaubois could have helped. In certain games, when we were either up big or down big, I also feel as if Roddy was not given enough minutes.
I think those opinions are felt by a majority of people on this board. We think Roddy should have got more minutes. I think Roddy should have got more minutes. But one thing that everyone seems to forget is that when Roddy did go crazy, scoring those 40 against Golden State, he was given a chance to play. In those next 4 games, Carlisle went to him, and Roddy was quite subpar. 9/24 from the field, 2/9 from 3, and committing 7 turnovers. One of those turnovers, in particular, was one of the most brain dead retarded ones I've ever seen...I believe he crossed the baseline while inbounding the ball after the other team scored. Roddy was given a chance after that game, and in those 4, he wasn't all that great. Lots of rookie mistakes, it seemed like.
That was late in the season. Earlier, there were places where I did feel Beaubois should have got a chance and he never did. Long stretches of time, too. In Carlisle's defense, I'll say that Roddy was a pretty bad PnR defender. Now, some of you might complain that this is no excuse because JET went out there every night. Well...you're right. But JET has been with team a lot longer, and he doesn't make those stupid mistakes that Beaubois would occasionally make.
I think I've stressed that I was not happy with the way Roddy was handled. However, I do think saying Carlisle is an "idiot", "needs to be fired", "isn't a real coach", just because he wouldn't give Roddy a lot of minutes, is kinda dumb. There were reasons not to always let Roddy play. And when he got a chance, let's just remember he wasn't perfect everytime he went out there. There were some bad games, and some bad stretches of games.
Now, this year I expect Roddy to play 82 games, barring injury, and assuming he progresses like he should. There's no reason for an explosive sophomore whose learned to play smarter while still penetrating at will and possessing a deadly three pointer not to get some minutes, whether he's a starter like Cuban wants, or not. And I expect that Roddy will play in nearly every game, if not every one.

I remember this and I hold it against Carlisle too. Before this, Roddy's minutes were so sporadic and yet he still showed enough flashes of talent to make everyone demand more minutes for him. Then Carlisle suddenly threw Roddy out on the floor as a starter for 35 minutes each game, which naturally put too much pressure on the kid. He fumbled around, knowing he would soon be cemented to the bench indefinitely all over again. It almost looked as if Carlisle wanted to prove to us Roddy wasn't ready for it. What I wanted to see was a moderate, consistent diet of 10-15 minutes off the bench to get him comfortable in a role and that's what we never saw.

I disagree that he threw him out there for starters minutes. He probably went in late 1st, and then was given about 2 minutes there and 6-8 minutes in the 2nd. He was not that great.
No doubt he should have got more consistent minutes, even if it was only 5 in the 2nd quarter, with more coming if the first 5-10 minutes were productive. The danger with that is you can take away his edge, and he's going in there trying not to make mistakes because they don't want to be taken out, but I think Roddy showed he was daring. Sometimes too much so, but still.
