Nash13, I don't think it is a sin or mortal sin to date outside the church or even marry outside the church.
However, my understanding is that the Catholic church does not recognize a Catholic's marriage outside the church. Speaking from experience, my parents (both strict Catholics) did tell me I was "going against the church" and my marriage would not be "recognized" by the Catholic church because I married in a Protestant church.
Even if my husband did not become Catholic, the Catholic church would "recognize" our marriage if we had been married by a Catholic priest and my husband signed a document agreeing to raise all children from our marriage Catholic.
