Default Timberwolves fire coach Randy Wittman

Timberwolves fire coach Randy Wittman

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The Minnesota Timberwolves fired coach Randy Wittman on Monday, two days after an embarrassing 23-point loss at home to the Los Angeles Clippers.

Kevin McHale, the team's vice president of basketball operations, will take over coaching duties, according to a person familiar with the decision who requested anonymity because an announcement had yet to be made.

Wittman was 38-105 since taking over for Dwane Casey in January 2007. McHale picked Wittman to preside over the team's massive rebuilding project in the post-Kevin Garnett era.

Wittman went 22-60 in his only full season at the helm last year. The team entered this season with higher expectations, but are off to a 4-15 start. After keeping things close in the early going, the Wolves lost by 29 points at New Jersey on Friday night, then were blown out by the lowly Clippers at home on Saturday night to seal Wittman's fate.

Never knew why they fired Dwayne Casey to begin with. I'm sure he is laughing at them right now...

Ownership can't figure out that McHale has run them into the ground. KMac is one step from joining his boy in Bean Town. Don't see how you move Mayo for Miller and Love. Mayo is by far a better player than Foye and McCants combined. I can see why they wanted Love, in terms of being a big with 3 skills, meshing well with jefferson, but to give up Mayo.

With all of Wittman's IU and Indiana connections, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him end up taking a position with our Mavs sometime in the next year, if no other more enticing job opportunities emerge for the unemployed but talented X's and O's Bobby Knight protege...

Has there ever been a coach hired during the season from the outside? It seems like when a coach is fired its always from within. Seems like it would be rather difficult for a coach to just come in and coach a team has no idea about.

No need to let that small detail get in the way of some good Avery bashing

Based on what I read this job may not be open this summer. McHale's not the interim coach, he's the coach. He was stripped of his GM VP of Basketball Ops title.
