I think this is the one he's talking about.

The Rumor Mill
A Deadline Peak In Mavs' War Room

By Mike Fisher -- DallasBasketball.com

The names of Michael Finley, Juwan Howard, Shawn Bradley and Donnell Harvey have all been broached in the literally hundreds of phone calls the Mavericks have received in anticipation of Thursday’s NBA trade deadline, sources tell DallasBasketball.com. And so have the names Marcus Camby and Kevin Willis.

But for Dallas, there are no major deals – and only the slightest chance for a minor one – on the horizon.

We poked our heads into the Mavs’ war room late Wednesday to try to sort the wheat from the chaff, the fact from the fiction and the gossip from the reality:

Michael Finley Finley’s contract makes it almost impossible to get value back, even if Dallas was really shopping him, which Mark Cuban denies. “Teams are asking about him,’’ one NBA source says, “but the Mavs still believe in him as part of their foundation.’’

One league exec not associated with the Mavs believes Dallas wants to see how far Finley can help the club go this year before considering a summer deal for a big man.

Chance of a Mavs-related deal: 1-in-1,000

Marcus Camby, Knicks Yes, the Knicks are shopping him. Yes, they called Dallas. But they demanded “a star’’ in return – which we’ll take to mean Finley. And the Mavs said “no thanks.’’ Dallas, and the rest of the league, is concerned about Camby’s injury history (he may not be ready to play this year until April). But the Mavs also concede that he has star potential.

The Knicks made it clear they need a star back, and they deserve a star back. It doesn’t look like they’ll get one from Dallas.

It is clear that Dallas would consider letting go of Howard in a Camby deal – but it is also clear that New York doesn’t consider Howard a star.

Chance of a Mavs-related deal: 1-in-1,000

Karl Malone, Jazz “They won’t trade him,’’ an NBA exec says. “There is really not very much Malone talk out there.’’

With all due respect to the Dallas talk shows trying to make something of a Finley-for-Malone deal: Do the math. It don’t add up.

Chance of a Mavs-related deal: 1-in-10,000

Juwan Howard, Mavs Increasingly, the Mavs are coming to the conclusion that Howard’s trade value will be much greater in the summer, when teams can see the light at the end of the tunnel of his $18 mil-a-year contract, and can built eventually cap space around the acquisition of Howard.

Chance of a Mavs-related deal: 1-in-50

Shawn Bradley, Mavs Do teams still covet him. You bet. “There is interest in Shawn Bradley,’’ says a source, “but the Mavs aren’t going to get any sort of big man worth anything in exchange for him.’’

The Mavs are not exactly thrilled with Bradley; some staffers are about ready to write him off as a factor. But they aren’t going to give away a 7-6 guy who makes just $4 mil a year.

Chance of a Mavs-related deal: 1-in-100

Donnell Harvey, Mavs We’re told ex-Dallas staffer Kiki Vandeweghe, now Denver’s GM, likes Harvey’s potential. But Harvey makes less than $1 million a year, which hardly makes him significant in the Nick Van Exel white-elephant sale.

(By the way, one team source, asked who is interested in Van Exel, says, “All of us. About 28 of us.’’)

Chance of a Mavs-related deal involving Harvey: 1-in-100.

Jahidi White, Wizards It’s a heck of a rumor, except that the Mavs don’t particularly like his game. No interest there.

White is a big body, but the big body the Mavs dream of – and that person doesn’t really have a name – has to have some skills to go along with it.

Chance of a Mavs-related deal: 1-in-10,000

Kevin Willis, Rockets This name has been discussed in the Mavs’ offices. He’s a quality guy, an experienced guy and a wide body. But Dallas frankly thinks Willis, 39 is out of gas.

Chance of a Mavs-related deal: 1-in-100

Brad Miller, Bulls-to-Pacers The Mavs liked Miller, the center involved in the Jalen Rose swap, and they did sniff around there before this week’s trade. When Mavs owner Mark Cuban says that multi-player trade eliminated any involvement Dallas might have had, it seems Miller was the guy.

But the Pacers were willing to include their star, Rose; the Mavs wouldn’t have done it for theirs, Finley. Oh, and the Mavs have once again confirmed that dealing with Chicago GM Jerry Krause is, well, very unpleasant. It’s a wonder the man gets any cooperation from anybody.

Rodney Rogers, Suns-to-Celtics There’s a power forward with a big body and shooting skills. Again, that deal is done. But did the Mavs want a piece of it?

Nope. He’s an undersized power forward who likes to shoot jump shots. That wouldn’t have worked.

Marc Jackson, Warriors We still think that if the Warriors want to give away a big man, Dallas might as well take him. But we can’t find any Mavs officials who agree.

Chance of a Mavs-related deal: 1-in-1,000

Olden Polynice, ex-Jazz Word is, the veteran street free agent has been emailing Cuban, asking for a job. Interesting. Of course, there are about 1,000 people a day who email Cuban looking for a job!

Chance of a Mavs-related deal: 1-in-1,000

Mavs officials are telling us to make sure we keep close to the situation right up until the deadline, when “wouldja?’’ conversations begin to crystallize. So we’ve brought our sleeping bags to the American Airlines Center, just in case.

Rumor on the Knicks boards circulated by Peter Vescey has talk of a possible 3-way trade between Dallas/Denver/New York with Howard to Denver, Van Exel to NYC, and Camby to Dallas. This trade is supposedly dead, but the possibility for a Howard for Camby + Filler trade is apparently still a possibility.

This doesn't sound all that good for the Mavericks.

More on Howard/Camby.

Howard/Camby 2

What would Camby do for the Mavericks at this point anyway? He's rumored not to be ready until April at the earliest, and the extent of his injury is not entirely clear right now.

Could the Mavs work with no semblance of a power low-post threat from now through the stretch run? And even if Camby could come back in time to contribute for to the division title chase, he STILL provides ZERO low-post offense.

On the positive side, he does provide some vertical defense and might match up more effectively against Duncan, Garnett, Webber and Wallace, but he offers nothing (or very little) against Shaq. A Camby/Bradley combo might be even less effective than Howard/Bradley, because Juwan can at least offer some defensive muscle.

Would this have been the time to give Wang and/or Harvey some more court time and let them work out the kinks in their low-post games?

Doesn't all add up.......

Camby's quickness, ability to run the floor, rebound, block shots, and defend a little in the low post makes him a better fit for this team than Howard at the PF spot. You are right though, the problem is the injuries. Having no power forward at all down the stretch would kill the Mavs. If Camby really does come back in April, there won't be enough time to get him into the flow. This would not be a good trade to do right now. Maybe we'll see it done in the off-season.

I like Camby a lot, but his health is too questionable. I don't mean just for this year but in the future. Camby has now in his 6th NBA season. Inly once has he reamined healthy throghout the season here are his game totals.

63
63
46 (50 game Season)
59
63
29 (Out of about 55)

I am afraid he is to injury prone, and as he gets older I don't expect that to get any better.

Granted Camby is always hurt, but I'd do a trade with Juwan for Camby in a NEW YORK SECOND... He'll be hurt for half the season, but hell Juwan didn't show up the first half of the season so it would be a wash.

yeah..i hear ya kid..
we'd be trading for a player that shows up for 50 games a year and giving up a guy that shows up for 25 games of the year...
